Chapter Twelve

When we returned to my apartment, I invited Trey inside. I wasn’t sure if we were headed for the bedroom or not. Trey seemed almost reluctant to take it to that level as she hovered briefly outside my door. I could see the flash of several emotions cross her face. Desire. Uncertainty. Reverence. I wasn’t certain which one would win out. Finally, she decided.

“Sure. I’d love to come in for a bit,” Trey said.

After the door closed, Trey made her move and pulled me into her arms. The kiss began softly as she explored my lips, and then her tongue made its way inside, stroking with a level of sensuousness I had only experienced once with Nino. I wondered if this is what it would be like with all women if Trey and I didn’t work out but quickly discarded that thought as my body reacted to her hands that roamed along my backside.

My cell phone rang, startling both of us, and we reluctantly broke apart. “Shit,” I swore.

Trey quirked her eyebrow. “Saved by the bell? Maybe the universe is telling me I should end the evening with that kiss.”

I chuckled. “Hardly.” I glanced at my phone. “Damn. It’s my sister. I need to take this. Do you mind?”

“No, of course not. Want me to hang around or leave now?”

“Stay.” I pulled the phone from my bag and answered, “Hey, what’s up? Did you find out what’s going on?”

“Yeah. You need to come home. Mom’s in the hospital.”

“What?” My voice rose a few octaves, and Trey led me to the couch, stroking my arm as we sat.

“When Brad and I arrived for a surprise visit, she couldn’t very well hide it because she wasn’t at home. Dad came home looking like he hadn’t slept for weeks. I knew something was seriously wrong. I don’t have all the information, but you can be sure I’m going to suss out what’s going on when I corner the doctor.”

“I doubt he’ll tell you anything. If Mom restricted access to her private health information, he can’t break her confidence. That’s how it works now. There’s some big law that protects a patient’s confidentiality.”

“We’ll see about that. If the doctor doesn’t tell me what’s going on, I’ll corner Dad. Can you get a flight out soon? We can double team Dad.”

“Sure. I’ll come straight to the hospital. St. Joe’s?”

“Yeah. I’ll text you the room number. You don’t need Brad to pick you up from the airport?”

“No. I’ll rent a car. I’d rather have my own transportation. No offense.”

“None taken. See you soon, little sis.”

“Okay. Bye. Love you.”

“Yeah, me too.”

I pressed the button to end the call and put my head in my hands. “I have to fly home. Sorry I can’t help you with your finals.”

“Screw my finals. I’ll be fine. I can talk to my professors and maybe take them early or late. I’ll come with you. I take it something bad is going on, and you have to go home earlier than you thought.
